Chin Augmentation
There are many reasons to have a chin augmentation (implants), however finding the right surgeon for an affordable cost is becoming more and more difficult. Most people are searching for a reasonably priced surgeon whom is well trained, board certified and who will deliver the best results based on their motivation and expectations of having this surgery.
Chin augmentation, also known as augmentation mentoplasty or genioplasty, is a cosmetic surgical procedure to strengthen a patient's chin and create harmony between the nose, chin, and neck to improve overall appearance. The procedure is often performed on patients with microgenia, which is the condition of having a receding chin. Bite correction surgery can be performed simultaneously.
Two procedures may be implemented to achieve chin augmentation. Movement of the jawbone is one option, and placement of a chin implant is another. Often, the two procedures are combined. Liposuction of the neck is sometimes beneficial to complete visual balance in the face. Surgeons usually combine chin augmentation with a face lift and/or rhinoplasty.
After incision guides are drawn on the patient's face, sedation is administered. Chin augmentation is usually performed in an outpatient surgery center or hospital. The surgery involves inconspicuous incisions, then detachment, replacement, and securing the jawbone. Many chin augmentations do not require jawbone manipulation. A chin implant, commonly made from silicone, Teflon, or Dacron, is sculpted and inserted into an incision made in the inner portion of the lower lip or under the chin. After internal correction is complete, the surgeon sutures incisions and tapes the chin to reduce post-op swelling.
Swelling and bruising subside in about 2 weeks, and patients see true results approximately 6 weeks after surgery. Patients can return to work in 7 to 10 days.
Chin augmentation surgery is a low-risk cosmetic procedure. However, some risks include infection, allergic reaction to the implant, loss of sensation, migration of the implant, injury to teeth, malposition, bleeding, weakened muscles in the lower lip and/or chin area, bleeding, and over- or under-correction.
After surgery, a patient will need to elevate her head for the first 24 hours, apply ice packs, and keep the chin taped to reduce swelling. A liquid diet and button-down shirts help keep the chin protected and rested during recovery. Refrain from eating hot foods until the mouth regains full sensation. Bandages can be replaced as needed for the first week following surgery. Rinsing the mouth with salt water and practicing good oral hygiene will deter infection and promote healing. Patients report an adjustment period to get used to smiling and speaking with their new facial shape.
